There has been a lot of simple
knitting going on at home, in the office and in the car. I’ve been away a lot this summer, leading
into the cooler fall weather. Now it is
time to “settle” as I tell the pups.
Travel, visitors, more travel, family events are fun and energizing, but
there comes a moment when it all has to stop while I take a breath and just
settle. That time is now.
I finished the baby blanket which
will be a shower gift from our daughter-in-law for the new baby boy coming to
her niece and husband in December. The
whole time I was knitting on this blanket I was thinking of the pink blanket I
knit and wrapped the new mother in when she was a baby herself. I held her in Church and at family
gatherings, and loved it because she was a quiet, calm little baby who smiled
quickly and laughed often. I wish her a
son like that and hope she will think of me as she wraps her own baby boy in
this blanket.
I finished a pair of socks because we all know that socks are required travel knitting. I spent a lot of knitting time in the car on socks (and some on the blanket). These sock were the victim of second sock syndrome. I had finished the first one months ago and couldn’t get back to them. You know how it is—I couldn’t find the needles I used on the first sock, what did I do with that cotton reinforcement thread, hmmmm where did I put that first sock so I can make sure this one matches in length, and so on.
I have started another pair of socks and promised myself not to fall prey
to the demons of second sock syndrome.
Finally, my super simple knitting has
spawned a bunch of fingerless mitts that are knit flat and seamed down the
side. Easy peasy mitts that allow for
all sorts of designs and decorative stitches.
The thumb is knit right in the middle of the piece and seamed along with
the sides. I used this method because I
wanted something mindless that I could knit even in the dark of a movie theater. Works!
So that’s what I have been up to,
along with the going and coming of the summer. I’m looking forward to a quiet, tranquil
winter… right after next weeks' visitors leave and the cataract surgery on January
21st. Some things are never
simple.
