Late Again

This time I'm late posting.  It has been a week--slow even for me!  We have been working longer hours at work, I've been knitting at the seed stitch Downtown Bonnet (seen above),  and then I've tried to finish the Pretty In Pink wrap, which is now in the seaming stage.  Anyway,  I usually don't do meme type posts but since the knitting is progressing slowly and the A to Z meme seems more interesting than most, here goes:

A:  Age - I never tell because people who know it say I look much younger than my age, but if anyone really cared they could figure it out from info on my blog.  I say why destroy illusions!
B:  Bedsize - Queen Sleep Number.  Couldn't live without the Sleep Number bed!
C:  Chore you hate - making salads.  I will cook anything anyone in the family wants but don't ask me to make a salad.  Can't explain it--just hate it.

D:  Dogs - Love my Jack Russell Terrier Macy.  She is my fur-baby and she's so sweet she even lets us sleep with her.
E:  Essential to start your day - Special K.
F:  Favorite color(s) - turquoise & brown.
G:  Gold or silver - I mix them but mostly silver.
H:  Height - 5'9" (used to be 5'10").
I:  Instruments you play - piano badly.  My claim to fame is that I can play a harmonica.
J:  Job title - accountant
K:  Kids - Six (four boys and two girls) and six grandchildren (four boys and two girls).
L:  Live:  In Texas but my heart is in Chicago.
M:  Mom's name - Carolyn.
N:  Nicknames - Kat, Kitty.
O:  Overnight hospital stays:  Six regular and six births.
P:  Pet Peeves:  Screechy voices.
Q:  Quote from a movie - Life is like a box of chocolates.  You never know what you're going to get.  (Forrest Gump)
R:  Right or left handed - right but one of my kids is left handed.  Don't know how that happened.
S:  Siblings - 0, I'm an only child.
T:  Take-out food - shrimp tempura from Taste of Asia.
U:  Underwear - Genie bra and bikini panties.  That's it!
V:  Veggies you hate - I can't think of any.  I'm an almost vegetarian.  Occasionally I lose it and eat meat but not often.
W:  What makes you run late - my sweet husband!  I'm never late when I go alone.
X:  Xrays - a few but many MRIs since the subdural hematoma.
Y:  Yummy food - chocolate and caramel, together or separately.
Z:  Zoo animals - polar bears!  Keep the snakes away from me!  Please!!

Slow Going or Moving Along

The multi-colored Pretty In Pink is moving along.  I was going to complain about how slow it's moving but that is never helpful in terms of making things move faster!  (Believe me if it helped I would complain a lot).  It is a big wrap so I guess I'm lucky it's going as fast as it is.  I've reached the back of the neck and will start the front with the next row so whohoo it will be finished soon!

Next, Wendy Bernard's DowntownBonnet.  I've made a half dozen knitted things from Wendy's patterns and I love them!!  She has a knack for clarity and direction that always leads to a beautiful finished object.  When I saw this cute little bonnet with the under-chin ties I giggled.  Not much makes me giggle at my age so I realized I had to knit this hat--maybe a bunch of them.
Other things are moving along at the Comfort Zone.  The Humming birds are humming along.  I report our sightings at the Journey North site and enjoy reading about other sightings in the U.S.  I don't know why we are still seeing them in Texas.  Whatever the reason we feel blessed to have brightly colored Ruby Throated Hummingbirds as well as tiny little brown Rufous.  The Ruby Throated in the picture loves to stop by and just sit on the top of the feeder and watch us through the window.  They are friendly little birds and will buzz around our heads and shoulders when we are on the patio or in the yard. It's heavenly!

The dogs and are maintaining their usual lazy life style.  We are always amazed at their established schedules.  They do certain things at specific times of the day and heaven help the person who interrupts their agenda.  I've actually had Max sit in my lap, facing me, with a snarl on his furry face because I picked him up from a nap in an office chair and snuggled him.  He gave me a look that said, "I am not amused."  Macy pouts and Max grumbles.  Best to leave them to their devices.

Life is good.

Odds and Ends

Note:  No knitting content today
Our Hummingbirds have joined us for breakfast every morning this week.  The online Hummingbird Journal reports huge numbers of the little birds swarming in the south and bird watchers are noticing more activity around their feeders because it has been hot and there are very few flowers for them.  Many people  even turn on the sprinklers so they can play in the water and fly through it. Please help keep our migrating Hummingbirds safe and well fed!"
Our DSL was down for two days while we are switching to a new service provider.  I nearly went crazy.  Have you ever tried to live without internet for even a few days?  I could give up TV before the internet!  Well, do I have a deal for you...

The iPhone Mobile Hotspot--don't leave home without it.  I love the service called "My Personal Hotspot" (sounds almost risqué).  When we were traveling to Chicago by RV we priced mobile wi fi hotspots and found them to be expensive and, reportedly, not efficient.  I already had an iPhone4 so I got this service and now I can turn on the hotspot on my phone, and my iPad, laptop and PC pick up wi fi from it where ever I am.  Love it to pieces and it kept me sane while the DSL was down.   That little phone in the picture is providing my PC with wi fi.

Are you a Where's Waldo lover as I am?  I admit I have loved the mysterious Waldo since a friend gave me a wand with glitter and sparkle floating in an unknown fluid.  The wand contains Waldo hidden among the glitter.  The problem is that I can never find him (once in two years).  So now I have a Where's Waldo App for my phone and iPad.  It satisfies my desire to know what the little rascal is doing.

Dogs, dogs, dogs!!  Can't live without them.  Our Macy and her little daily visitor Max have a favorite game they play with new toys.  We have to buy two toys because they each must have one.  They play with them separately and together for several hours, then they get down to the business of removing the squeaker from the toys along with a large quantity of fluff.  We call this process, "Squeak gutting and defluffing."  The toys then go to my desk and when I have two I re-stuff and sew them.  The two dogs will stand on either side of me while I sew and when I finish I give a toy to each and off they go to play.  I don't know how we could live without their little doggie idiosyncrasies.

Well that's it.  I was just thinking about random things.  Who wants to think about work?

Life is good.

They Never Called Me Kate

Early in my life I asked why no one ever called me by the name on my birth certificate--Katherine.  There was never a good answer.  My Mom and Dad called me Kitty.  Teachers called me Kathy.  Friends called me Kat.  Others called me Kit, Kat, Kath, hey you, but no one ever used my real name.  When I became a "big person" and could decide what I wanted people to call me I decided on Katherine.  Every time a different name was spoken I would correct it--"Katherine!"  It finally stuck but now I wonder why I didn't choose Kate as in Princess, great beauty, fashion trend setter, darling of celebrity watchers.

I guess my birth name is as close as I'll ever come to that, except maybe The Shawl!  The wonderful "Look at me I'm a regular person type Princess" shawl.  I have to knit it.  I have to toss that great shawl around my shoulders and go to Wal-Mart.  Then they can call me anything they want as long as they preface it with my proper title--Princess!

To accomplish this goal I ordered a pretty hunter green wool with flecks of burgundy and teal tweed.  What did I get?  Well, let's just say I ordered wool and got steel wool.  I didn't know wool could be so rough.  What kind of sheep are they raising in New Zealand?

As much as I want to knit the shawl now, I am thinking about returning the yarn and waiting for something softer to arrive.  I can't imagine going to the Wal-Mart Supercenter wearing a scratchy shawl and itching as I push my cart.  People will whisper, "Well she certainly isn't Kate."

But I am.  I really am!

Long Hot Summer

Sitting on the patio with the mister sending out a cooling spray and the sun setting in front of me, dog and knitting in my lap.  Heaven!  That's where I was last evening, sitting and thinking of all the reasons I love Texas.  I didn't always--love Texas that is.  It took me a long, long time after leaving Chicago to realize the blessings this hot, parched, barren land could bring.  I closed my eyes as I thought about it and remembered one of my first feelings of love for rough and rugged Texas.

I was driving to my office one morning about 8 years ago.  It was a snowy, cold morning and there were not many cars on the road so I was able to slow down considerably as I passed a wonderful sight.  There, beside the fence along the road, was a cowboy.  A real, honest to goodness Texas cowboy.  He was about 6 foot 2 or 3 inches, dressed in respectable cowboy gear--jeans, boots, spurs, gloves, shearling jacket with collar turned up, bandana.  His hat was pulled down low over his face against the blowing snow.  He was handsome as all get out and I watched him working on the fence until I realized I needed to get back to watching the road ahead.  If only I had been packing a camera!

When I pulled into the office parking lot I sat there for a few minutes with a big grin on my face.  Then I tramped into the office and as I stomped the snow off my feet and was greeted by several voices saying "good morning," I smiled real big and said for the first time, "I LOVE TEXAS!"

I would enjoy hearing your stories of love for where on earth you are!  I know we all have them.  Those moments when we realize we don't want to be anywhere other than where we are at that moment.  Please share!

What do you do when the projects you are knitting are not working out?  Yep, that's what I'm going to do to the sock yarn scarves I've just started.  I thought the beautiful colors would make up for the fact that a scarf knit in sock yarn with size 3 needles takes for--ev--er!!  I can't take it.  I've been knitting for a week and the scarves are not getting any longer.

The hot summer has dealt me a big knitting blow but I still love Texas!

I'm Late! I'm Late For a Very Important Date

I came awake this morning when I entered the date into a spreadsheet--August 18th.  That's half way through August and more than half way through the year.  I have not started knitting a single Christmas gift.  I haven't even decided what to knit!  So, to take my mind off of all things spreadsheet related I started searching for gift patterns.  Doesn't get the work done but it is a lot more fun.

There are a lot of really great gift ideas out there in knitting land, but I am a utilitarian type of knitter so scarves, shawls, socks, hats, etc. are my favorite knits.  Add to that the fact that just when I think I have gifted one too many hats or scarves, someone asks me if I can knit them another.  So, utilitarian it is!!

The world famous (among knitters) Noro scarf has been loved by my family for years now and there are two family members who have never received one.  Done--that's two.  Then, two of the Grandchildren can't get enough silly hats like last year's Dragon hat.  Bam, two more--the Dead Fish Hat.  I'm on a roll!  DIL#2 mentioned she needs a cashmere cowl and DIL#1 needs a blue shawl to go with a particular dress.  Watch out!  I'm getting dangerous.

Anyway, another half hour of pattern surfing tomorrow and I will be well on the way to getting Christmas knitting off the ground!  I may even start looking for yarn--right after I finish this spreadsheet!

Life is good.
